The primary goal of the Chapter is to monitor the status of women working in astronomy in Australia and recommend future actions that will improve the environment for all astronomers. To do so, it is important that we have accurate statistical information on which to base an evaluation. The ASA maintains a database of its members, their status and gender, which is very useful in monitoring the number of women associated with the ASA. The Chapter will extend this database and maintain a national registry.
To help improve the status of women in astronomy, the Chapter will assist to ensure appropriate representation for women within the Australian astronomy community, both at scientific meetings and on high-level decision making committees. The registry could help assist in this goal.
The Chapter would also enable networking via annual women in astronomy sessions at ASA Annual Science Meetings.
